The
Artist...
"I learned early on to occupy my time with drawing and studying nature. A short walk from my house was 'Round Top', an American Indian historical site. It overlooks the Susquehanna River, where I spent long hours watching birds, drawing and writing. I also spent a lot of time at my father’s elbow in his workshop, watching him do a woodcarving, paint a landscape, etch glass, repair 'you name it' and all kinds of creative endeavors. It’s definitely where I get my artistic ability from!
I also love
inventing things around the studio and trying new ways to 'make the backpack
lighter', for outdoor painting excursions.
I’ll post them on the 'What’s New' page when I can.
Painting...
"I have always loved to draw and
paint the face, to move a shadow ever so slightly makes a different expression
and maybe a different person! But this is the beauty of it.
How exciting it is to work on a portrait and reach a point when they seem
to look back at you. They are
living under your hand and coming to life. The challenge of the highest degree
for an artist is to do the portrait, there is no faking it, either you capture
your subject or you don’t. I love
this challenge!
"But I cannot label myself as just a portrait artist. The
other subjects I paint all have their own place in my desire to express
life in art-form. I strive
to capture the spirit or essence of my subject, whether it be a person, bird,
animal or a tree in a landscape. Now I am putting them together and painting "Mythological and Narrative" themes,
where I love to explore the beauty of women and their relationship to nature.
And
also
what I would call "Spiritual Surrealism," colorful and peaceful."
