I have three categories of mediums in portraiture. For each category, Oil Painting, Watercolor (mixed media) and Drawing I can paint people or animals alike. You will see the quality carries through no matter if it is a loved pet or a loved "one"! Please contact me if you have any questions about possibly having a portrait done.

Also consider that my portraits can be made very personal with the subjects resembling the Mythological or Fantasy paintings in my gallery. We can plan the painting together with the subject painted in a very creative way that is unique to my style!

Having a portrait painted in oil is an excellent way to remember a family member or friend forever and makes a lasting gift.

My paintings are completed on stretched canvas or on prepared hardboard. For my style of realistic painting, I prepare each canvas with several layers of gesso, each layer upon drying is finely scraped and sanded until smooth.

As oil paint ages, it gets more transparent letting previous layers work together. That is why the old masters paintings have a depth that cannot be matched by modern painting methods. I work on my paintings with this in mind, each carefully painted layer working together in harmony.

It is the careful work and craftsmanship that goes into your portrait, that will ensure it is enjoyed by many generations to come.

I have my own original style when it comes to watercolor paintings. I have two approaches, one is to start with a looseness then go back to tighten up details using color pencils, ink or pastels. The other is to start out with a very detailed drawing and lay in my darkest values, then work from there keeping it fresh looking as I work.

Both lend a spontaneous feel to the painting and life if it's own. I have always felt that animals should be painted with a spontaneity, because they are always on the move.

My past experience as a Zookeeper and having a farm with all kinds of animals has given me a first hand knowledge of animals and birds. The birds I have always loved to paint because I am an avid bird watcher from way back!

A portrait drawing is an elegant and inexpensive gift. It is an excellent way to remember a family member, a pet or friend forever and makes a lasting gift. I can't tell you the emotional response it brings from the person receiving it.

Some people like to have one of their mother and father to hang side by side, using the same colored paper so they match. This is great for old black and white photos you have of family members.

Portraits are done in conte' pencil have a warmth and depth to the darks that is striking and unmatchable. Sometimes I use only conte', sometimes I add graphite for more subtleties in surface textures. All drawings are done on the highest quality 100% acid free paper in your choice of color.
